One thing that people tend to not realize is what started and holds his hatred for the Vajra. It is one concept people often miss or like to state otherwise that it is related to Sheryl. Perhaps in Ep22 and onward, that gives him another reason to hate them, but up until then, what gives him his reason?

As a result of his fine features and long hair he is often mistaken for a girl at first glance, even receiving the nickname 'Hime' (Princess). His appearance was inherited from his late mother, Miyo. Born into a well-known Kabuki family, his persistent yearning for the skies has made for a thorny relationship with his father. Alto is now undertaking pilot courses at Mihoshi Academy. He is constantly fretting about living aboard Macross Frontier. After getting the chance to pilot the VF-25 Messiah variable fighter (due to its original pilot Henry Gilliam being killed by a large type Vajra) his flying skills bring the attention of Ozma Lee, who accepts him as a candidate for the S.M.S. Skull Squadron. He has developed emotional bond with both Ranka Lee and Sheryl Nome, despite not knowing how he truly feels for both of them.

Alto Saotome (早乙女 アルト Saotome Aruto) is a high school student enrolled in a pilot training course at the Mihoshi Academy aboard the Macross Frontier fleet. Thanks to his handsome visage and long hair, he is often mistaken for a girl — but he is otherwise a perfectly normal boy. He usually has a defiant, standoffish personality. He was born into a prestigious kabuki family, but due to his yearning for the skies and tense relationship with his father, he is planning to become a Valkyrie pilot. As a kabuki actor, Alto is know for his legendary stage performance in "Sakura Hime Azuma Bunshô/「桜姫東文章」".

He is constantly fretting about living aboard the Macross Frontier fleet, but since the Vajra attack, he has been piloting the latest variable fighter, the VF-25.
